The loot guide covers three confirmed sources — abandoned structures, the forest and the wider open world — and two confirmed travel options — swimming across water and using boats. New settlements and vehicles are planned for the Early Access roadmap, so the map keeps growing after launch.

Loot Guide and Exploration at a Glance

This loot guide for THE DEAD WE KNEW: Open World Survival covers where players find materials, how exploration feeds the shelter loop, and what travel options are confirmed before the October 22, 2026 Early Access launch. The Steam tagline is direct: "loot abandoned places, build your shelter, produce food, and manage your resources." Exploration is the front of the survival loop; everything downstream starts with what you bring back.

What Players Loot

Three confirmed sources feed the shelter:

  1. Abandoned structures — buildings left empty after the apocalypse.
  2. The forest — natural resources and animals.
  3. The wider open world — foraged natural resources and scattered pieces.

Each piece collected goes straight into the same pipeline: walls, fires, crafting, cooking, defense. During fog windows the value of every found item rises because the world becomes more dangerous and exploration riskier.

Confirmed Travel Options

  • Swimming across water.
  • Using boats to cross water.
  • New settlements and locations planned for Early Access.
  • Vehicles planned for the Early Access roadmap.

These travel options matter because the open-world map is the source of both raw and crafted inputs, so getting between biomes is part of the survival loop.

Where Loot Sits in the Loop

Loot runs feed the shelter, the workshop, the cooking fire and the defense wall. Each trip out is a chance to top up the supplies that hold off the next fog window. In co-op the same trips split across teammates, so one player can scout while another hauls.
